The Folk Implosion - Walk Thru Me (album)

C'était un retour attendu, Lou Barlow et John Davis de nouveau réunis pour un nouvel album de The Folk Implosion dans lequel ils partagent de nouveau le micro. Walk Thru Me fait pencher plus la balance vers le rock à guitare, et saz, instrument à corde ottoman qui s'intègre parfaiement à la sauce du duo. La basse y tient aussi une bonne place d'ailleurs. Après toutes ces années de pause, ces deux touche-à-tout de la scène indé n'ont rien perdu de leur complicité créative, ici soutenue par la production de Scott Solter. Walk Thru Me se place parmi les sorties marquantes de l'année 2024, un disque de retrouvailles pour les fans ainsi que de renouvellement comme le duo sait faire.

John Davis - Love In The Time Of Capital (album)

Et revoilà John Davis avec un nouvel album autant folk que pop rock, alternant chansons acoustiques et formation électrique, guitare, basse et batterie. Voire un peu plus. Love In The Time Of Capital confirme encore les talents de songwriting de l'ex-ex Folk Implosion, duo dont on attend aussi du nouveau prochainement. L'excellent Here In The Dark Room éveille des souvenirs de la période Blue Mountains / Dare To Be Surprised. L'album se clôt par un clin d'oeil à ses aventures parisiennes, et on espère l'y revoir bientôt.

John Davis is back again with a new album that's both folk and pop rock, alternating acoustic songs and an electric formation, guitar, bass and drums. And more. Love In The Time Of Capital confirms again the songwriting talents of the ex-ex Folk Implosion, while we're waiting for new stuff from this duo. The excellent Here In The Dark Room awakes memories from the Blue Mountains / Dare To Be Surprised period. The album closes with a nod to his parisian adventures and we hope to see him there soon.

John Davis & the Cicadas - El Pulpo (Album)

John Davis est revenu d'une longue absence en 2013, un retour plein de promesses : un album, Spare Parts, suivi quelques mois plus tard de l'annonce d'un projet qui le tenait à cœur. Il s'est penché sur le cas de l'industrie agro-alimentaire et s'est nourri de lectures. Enseignant, profitant des vacances scolaires pour y travailler, le projet aura finalement mis 4 étés avant d'éclore ce mois-ci sous le titre El Pulpo.
Le co-fondateur de The Folk Implosion s'est éloigné de la folk, du moins dans la forme, s'entourant de quelques musiciens et travaillant intensément avec le producteur Scott Solter pour sculpter les 13 titres, d'une durée moyenne légèrement inférieure à 6 minutes, de cet album. Comme une foule affairée ou une machine impitoyable, El Pulpo renferme une infinité de sons, de mouvements et autres informations grouillantes orchestrés avec une béatitude sortie tout droit d'un spot publicitaire déshumanisé. Mais c'est beau. Et fascinant.
Différents sujets interconnectés (avec les références bibliographiques pour la version CD) sont traités, du libre échange aux politiques plus favorables aux prisons qu'aux écoles en passant par la pollution des sols, avec autant de sérieux que de minutie dans les arrangements. C'est donc un gros travail qu'on mené John Davis et sa bande dans la réalisation du tentaculaire El Pulpo, un album pop et expérimental, original et sans futilités. Sortie prévue ce 20 octobre.

John Davis came back from a long absence in 2013, a return full of promises: an album, Spare Parts, followed a few months later by the announcement of a project that matters to him. He looked at the case of food-processing industry and fed himself with reads. Being a teacher he worked on it during school vacations and the project took finally 4 summers before hatching out this month under the title El Pulpo.
The co-founder of The Folk Implosion got away from folk music, at least in the form, surrounding himself with some musicians and working intensively with the producer Scott Solter to shape the album's 13 tracks with an average duration a bit under 6 minutes. Like a busy crowd or a ruthless machine El Pulpo holds an infinity of sounds, movements and other swarming informations orchestrated with a bliss straight from a dehumanized commercial. But it's beautiful. And fascinating.
Various interconnected subjetcs (with bibliographic references on the CD version) are addressed, from the free-market to the politics more favourable towards prisons than schools by the way of ground contamination, with as much seriousness as meticulousness for the arrangements. So it's an important work that John Davis and his band led in the realisation of the sprawling El Pulpo, an experimental and pop album, unique and without any futility. Release planned this october 20th.

John Davis' forthcoming album on Kickstarter

Après 15 ans d'absence puis Spare Parts sorti l'année dernière, John Davis s’apprête à sortir un nouvel album plus dans l'esprit Folk Implosion que le précédent.

Il vient de lancer une campagne sur Kickstarter pour l'aider à financer son projet, avec de nombreux lots mais surtout un album qui s'annonce très bon à la clé.

Quelques extraits instrumentaux peuvent être entendus dans la vidéo, John Davis le décrit comme politique et électr(on)ique avec plus de claviers que de guitares mais aussi du saz, de l'oud, marimba, trompette...

After 15 silent years then Spare Parts released last year, John Davis is preparing a new album which is going to sound more like his work with the Folk Implosion than his previous one.

He has just launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund his project and there are lots of great rewards.

Some instrumental excerpts can be heard on the video, John Davis describes his album as political and electr(on)ic with more keyboards than guitars but also saz, oud, marimba, trumpets...
