Paul Vickers & The Leg - Jump and The Leg - Chromatic Perversion (albums)

Ce début d'année a eu de bons côtés aussi, comme les sorties, à quelques semaines d'écart, des albums de Paul Vickers & The Leg et de The Leg (sans Paul Vickers). Le groupe s'est étoffé de deux nouveaux membres : James Metcalfe et John Mackie (ex-Khaya).
La nouvelle formation se veut plus "pop", mais pas trop quand même.
Jump de Paul Vickers & The Leg peut effectivement être un album sautillant. On saute à la dynamite, dans l'univers fantasque et peu raisonnable de Paul Vickers, comme en témoigne l'entrainant Chicken Church.
Quand The Leg n'accompagne pas Paul Vickers, Dan Mutch reprend le chant. L'un comme l'autre ont des voix qui sortent de l'ordinaire, mais de façon différente. Chromatic Perversion de The Leg marie folk, punk et pop avec goût pour la distorsion, les arrangements de violoncelle et les rythmes roulants et frénétiques.

The beginning of this years had also good sides, like the releases, within a few weeks, of the albums of Paul Vickers & The Leg and The Leg (without Paul Vickers). The band has grown with two new members: James Metcalfe and John Mackie (ex-Khaya).
The new formation sounds a little bit more "pop", but not too much.
Jump by Paul Vickers & The Leg can effectively be a boucing album. In french, "sauter" means both "jump" and "blow up", so it's like jumping with dynamite, in the whimsical and not much reasonable world of Paul Vickers, as proves the catchy Chicken Church.
When The Leg does not backs Paul Vickers, Dan Mutch qoes back to the microphone. Both have a voice that is out of the ordinary but in different ways. Chromatic Perversion by The Leg matches folk, punk and pop music with a taste for distortion, cello arrangements and rolling and frenetic rhythms.

AVOIDANCE by Khaya (1999)

Avec Avoidance, la pop d'outre-manche des années 90 finit avec un pétard dans la bouche. Le groupe a deux albums et demi pour à peu près autant d'années d'existence contenait autant que possible sa révolte derrière des cordes et des mélodies pop mais l'innocence était déjà loin.
Khaya chante "des chansons tristes parce que tout le monde en fait" et fait danser sur Music Is 4 Pussys, mais c'est sur Husbands qu'ils réalisent les plus gros bâton de dynamite de fin de siècle, l'impression de se retrouver dans le tambour d'une machine à laver en mode séchage et de tourner à une vitesse folle.
Avoidance bouscule pour sûr.
With Avoidance, 90s pop music from across the Channel ends with a banger in its mouth. The band of two albums and a half and almost as many years of existance contained as much as possible its rebellion behind strings and pop melodies but innocence was already far.
Khaya sings "sad songs because everybody does" and makes us dance on Music Is 4 Pussys, but it's on Husbands that they produce the biggest dynamite stick of the century's end, the impression of being inside a washing machine's drum on drying mode and rolling at a crazy speed.
Avoidance shakes up for sure.


SPOILS FOR SURVIVORS by 63 crayons (2007)
Le groupe de Charlie Johnston fait un bon parallèle pyrotechnique, Spoils For Survivors met dans sa mixture psychédélique une énergie similaire à celle des Pixies, des notes de jazz, ska, électro et punk. Cette fois-ci on danse désespérément avec son chat et on va au supermarché oublier les morts, les 63 Crayons dessinent une vision sombre et froide de leur époque.
L'album fait écho d'une certaine manière à The Revolution Will Not Be Televised de Gil Scott Heron, traitant de politique, société de consommation et propagande, "ne fais pas confiance à ton poste de télé", dans un monde devenu fou flirtant avec la science-fiction dont les effets sonores parsèment le disque. Pourtant il n'est pas question de fiction mais de l'absurdité d'une réalité filant droit au mur.
The band of Charlie Johnston makes a good pyrotechnic parallel, Spoils For Survivors puts in its psychedelic mixture an energy similar to the one of the Pixies, notes of jazz, ska, electronic and punk. This time we dance with a cat and go to the supermarket to forget the dead, the 63 Crayons draw a gloomy and cold vision of their time.
The album makes an echo in a certain way of Gil Scott Heron's The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, concerning politics, consumer society and propaganda, "don't trust your TV", in a world gone crazy flirting with science-fiction which sound effects scatter the record. Yet it's not about fiction but the absurdity of a reality heading for disaster.

Hidden Pop Classics est une sélection de disques qui m'ont marqués et n'ont jamais vieilli. Il n'est pas question ici de grands noms, quoiqu'ils le soient pour moi, mais de grands albums sortis à l'écart des projecteurs.
