Alex Rainer - Time Changes (album)

 Alex Rainer est un songwriter basé à New-York, son album Time Changes a des tonalités folk 60s avec un talent certain pour les mélodies. On peu penser à Simon & Garfunkel ou Nick Drake par exemple, par moments, et même, plus récent, Jim O'Rourke.
Au-delà de la guitare et de la voix, l'instrumentation est légère, ce sont souvent des petites surprises auditives, comme le bloc à deux tons sur Head Held High qui lui donne un côté un peu amusant.
C'est un très bel album tout en douceur, aérien, au-dessus de la Grosse Pomme. On est pris dedans dès le premier morceau, The Animals, et on se laisse porter jusqu'à la fin.

Alex Rainer is a songwriter based in New-York, his album Time Changes has a 60s folk music tone with a certain talent for melodies. I can think of Simon & Garfunkel or Nick Drake for example, every now and then, and even also, more recent, Jim O'Rourke.
Beyond the guitar and the voice, the instrumentation is light, often little auditive surprises, like the two tone woodblock on Head Held High, that gives the song something amusing.
It's a really beautiful album, soft and aerial, above the Big Apple. We're caught since the first song, The Animals, and we let ourselves float until the end of the album.

A Big Silent Elephant - Useless Love Songs (Album)

Le nouveau A Big Silent Elephant est une plongée onirique et rétrosonique hautement psychédélique comme on est habitué avec Mauro Da Re. Il dédie chacune de ces 8 chansons à des personnes différentes, en lien avec ce qu'il y chante.
Toujours bien accompagné, le doux pachyderme, mène sa petite fanfare rayonnante de couleurs comme un cousin éloigné du collectif américain Elephant 6, son goût pour les bandes magnétiques, les vieux claviers et les belles mélodies touche toujours dans le mille ce qui fait que ce Useless Love Songs joint l'inutile à l'agréable. Inutile, vraiment ? Un éternel été ou la marque que ça imprime en nous, un peu jaunie avec le temps mais toujours présente.

The new A Big Silent Elephant is a dreamy and retrosonic diving highly psychedelic like we're used to with Mauro Da Re. He dedicates each one of the 8 song to different persons related to what he sings.
Always in good company, the gentle pachyderm, leads its little fanfare beaming of colours like a distant cousin of the american Elephant 6 collective, his taste for magnetic tapes, old keyboards and beautiful melodies is still right on the mark which makes this Useless Love Songs combine the useless with pleasure. Useless, really? An eternal summer or the mark it prints on us, a little bit yellowed with time but still present.

Sawak - Sawak (Album)

Cracovie a été le point de rencontre des 4 musiciens de Sawak, originaires de Naples (Italie), Donegal (Irlande) et Chicago (États-Unis), le quatuor s'est retrouvé en Pologne pour expérimenter et enregistrer les 9 titres de l'album, simplement nommés par leur numérotation, comme le nombre d'étapes ou de chapitres de ce voyage sonique.
Sawak font du rock instrumental devant lequel on peut ajouter divers autres qualificatifs : post, kraut, expérimental, noise etc... Autour de leur colonne vertébrale faite de batterie, basse et deux guitares s'ajoutent des instruments comme de l'orgue, du celesta, des saxophones, stylophones.
Je me laisse porter par le défilé des morceaux pensés sous forme de carnet de voyage avec ses paysages changeants et ses anecdotes, ses mélodies aux influences folk. Parfois ça chante un petit peu sur ces routes pas si désertes, parfois aussi les morceaux explosent dans un psychédélisme étourdissant comme à la fin de 8.
Une bonne dose de plaisir.

Krakow have been the meeting point of the 4 musicians of Sawak coming from Naples (Italy), Donegal (Ireland) and Chicago (United-States), the quatuor met in Poland to experiment and record the 9 tracks of the album, simply named after their number, like a number of steps or chapters of a sonic trip.
Sawak make instrumental rock before which you can add diverse other terms: post, kraut, experimental, noise etc... Around their spine made of drums, bass and two guitars are added instruments like organs, celesta, saxophones, stylophones.
I let myself be carried along the parade of pieces thought as a kind of a travel diary with it's changing landscapes, its anecdotes, its melodies influenced by folk music. Sometimes there is a little bit of singing on these not-so-desert roads, sometimes also the songs explode in an astonishing psychedelism as in the end of 8.
A real dose of pleasure.

Algis Fediajevas - Mano Bičiuli Nerime (Album)

Algis Fediajevas est un jeune musicien lituanien et guitariste talentueux naviguant dans la sphère folk avec des compositions sans artifices : une guitare acoustique qui occupe l'espace, une voix humble, parfois un harmonica, parfois un violon.

La sensibilité des compositions est la première chose qui frappe à l'écoute de son dernier album Mano Bičiuli Nerime (Mon ami l'anxiété), on pense tout de suite à de grands noms : Nick Drake, Bert Jansch... Algis Fediajevas se concentre sur l'essentiel et n'en fais pas trop.

Ses textes vont et viennent entre intimité et altérité avec humanité, le chant en lituanien peu banal pour les non locaux est appréciable, il est néanmoins intéressant de pouvoir avoir un œil sur les traductions afin de mieux cerner ses pensées.

Mano Bičiuli Nerime est un album apaisant et léger, bien loin en réalité de l'anxiété qui le titre, à moins qu'Algis Fediajevas ait fait la paix avec celle-ci. Un excellent album pour adoucir l'hiver en tout cas.

Algis Fediajevas is a young lithuanian musician and a talented guitarist navigating on the folk sphere with unartificial compositions: an acoustic guitar occupying the space, a humble voice, sometimes a harmonica, sometimes a violin.

The sensibility of the compositions is the first thing that hit me while listening to his latest album Mano Bičiuli Nerime (My friend, anxiety) and reminded me great names such as Nick Drake, Bert Jansch... Algis Fediajevas focuses on the essential and does not overdo it.

His texts come and go between inner self and otherness with humanity, the rather unusual for non locals lithuanian singing is noticeable though it is interesting to have an eye on the translations to understand his thoughts better.

Mano Bičiuli Nerime is a light and calming album, far from the anxiety that entitles it, unless Algis Fediajevas has made peace with it. An excellent album to soften winter anyway.

Vous devez déjà connaitre un peu Mauro Da Re si vous lisez ce blog et/ou avez écouté les compilations You Don't Have To Be Fashionable, on le retrouve derrière A Man And His Broken Piano en solo ou avec Beyza Yazgan.

Il y a quelques mois il laissait échapper quelques titres de son projet A Big Silent Elephant dans un EP et maintenant vient l'album Sonne, sorti lundi chez Resonating Wood. 9 titres de folk psychédélique et lo-fi enregistrés sur du matériel analogique d'une autre époque avec des mélodies fantasmagoriques et des ambiances clair-obscure. Comme sur la pochette, Mauro Da Re altère les sources de lumière pour créer des chansons étranges et expressionnistes.

You might already know Mauro Da Re if you read this blog and listened to the compilations You Don't Have To Be Fashionable, he's the man behind A Man And His Broken Piano, alone or with Beyza Yazgan.

Some months ago he has revealed a few tracks of his project A Big Silent Elephant on an EP and now comes the album Sonne released on monday on Resonating Wood. 9 psychedelic lo-fi folk tracks recorded on analog equipment from another time with eerie melodies and chiaroscuro athmospheres. As on the artwork, Mauro Da Re alters light sources to create strange and expressionist songs.
