The Russell Club - January Sales (EP)

En escapade solo de son groupe Monkeys In Love, Steve Simms-Luddington lance une série d'EPs saisoniers. January Sales est le premier de cette série avec deux titres synthétiques de post-punk à la croisée des chemins de ce qu'il fait habituellement avec son groupe et des délires sonores sci-fi-lo-fi de groupes comme The Clears. On attend vite les prochains !

On a solo escape from his band Monkeys In Love, Steve Simms-Luddington launches a serie of seasonal EPs. January Sales is the first one of this serie with two synthetic post-punk tracks at the crossroads of what he usually does with his band and some sci-fi-lo-fi sonic deliriums of bands like The Clears. Monkeys In Love - ...Live In New Stoke Newington (Album)

Pour mettre les choses au clair avant d'aller plus loin, ce nouvel album des Monkeys In Love n'est pas un live et New Stoke Newington est un quartier de Manchester fictif. Auparavant thème d'une chanson du précédent album The Monkeys In Love Take The Biscuit, New Stoke Newington a désormais tout un album qui lui est consacré.
Inspiré par des coins de Manchester nommés en référence à des quartiers londoniens, Monkeys In Love Live In New Stoke Newington met en musique la gentrification, ses lieux branchés et ses hipsters en quête de reconnaissance (un peu forcée ?) comme sur le titre Validate Me, où la communication humaine se retrouve pervertie par sa conception mercantile.
La tonalité générale ici tend largement vers le punk mais il faut plus d'un qualificatif pour cerner la musique de ce groupe fan de library music. Nappes de guitares et synthés forment les diverses couches de cette étrange écorce sonore un peu psyché.
Laura et Steve Simms-Luddington partagent et échangent leur voix et leur humour grinçant sur l'ensemble des 9 chansons dont Cocaine Radius, placé en plein milieu du disque, fait office de moment d'apesanteur dans cette joyeuse agitation.

To get everything clear before going further, this new album by Monkeys In Love is not a live one and New Stoke Newington is a fictive Manchester neighbourhood. Formerly the theme of a song from the previous album The Monkeys In Love Take The Biscuit, New Stoke Newington now has a whole album dedicated to it.
Inspired by Manchester areas named after London neighbourhoods, Monkeys In Love Live In New Stoke Newington sets the gentrification to music, its trendy places and its hipsters looking for (forced?) recognition as in the track Validate Me, where human communication is being perverted by its mercantile conception.
The general tone here tends mostly towards punk but more than one term is needed to pinpoint the music of this band amateur of library music. Waves of guitars and synths form the layers of this strange noisy and a bit psychedelic bark.
Laura and Steve Simms-Luddington share and swap their voice and dry humour all along the 9 songs whose Cocaine Radius, placed in the very center of the disc, serves as a weightless moment in this joyful agitation.

Monkeys In Love - Take The Biscuit

Tout le monde est malade et tousse dans tous les sens, c'est le printemps viral, c'est pas la grande joie mais on peut y remédier avec le nouvel album de Monkeys In Love qui vous aidera à vous échauffer pour vos prochaines sorties re-sociabilisantes en bonne santé.
La nouvelle galette Take The Biscuit est donc un biscuit à partager et un biscuit, ça donne le sourire (mettons de côté le sens de l'expression "take the biscuit").
La pop remuante des Monkeys In Love navigue entre des groupes comme Stereolab, Sonic Youth, B-52s... avec un son de guitare très 90s. La chanson "Circle Of Jerks" présente sur le volume 2 des compilations You Don't Have To Be Fashionable apparaît dans de nouveaux beaux habits.
Sur certains titres ("In Comic Sans" et "47 Baked Potatoes") la flûte apporte une petite touche psyché-cool fort plaisante et cerise sur la gâteau, il y a même du stylophone sur le morceau d'ouverture. Entre sofa-pop et rock'n'roll noisy, Take The Biscuit est un excellent disque varié et pas ennuyeux pour indie-rockers trentenaires et nostalgiques.

Monkeys In Love's stirring pop surfs between bands like Stereolab, Sonic Youth, B-52s... with a very 90s-like guitar sound. The song 'Circle Of Jerks' that was on the 2nd volume of the compilations You Don't Have To Be Fashionable appears with new beautiful clothes.
On some tracks ('In Comic Sans' et '47 Baked Potatoes') the flute brings a highly pleasant little psychedelicool touch and cherry on the cake there's even stylophone on the opening track. Between sofa-pop and noisy rock'n'roll, Take The Biscuit is an excellent varied and not boring album for nostalgic thirty-year-old (or more) indie rockers.
