Feeling Figures - Everything Around You (album)

Deuxième album (mais enregistré en premier) des montréalais Feeling Figures, Everything Around You, brasse des influences rock assez larges. Si la couleur dominante est plutôt alt rock avec des guitares saturées un peu noisy et souvent Zakary Slaw au chant, Kay Moon apporte une touche plus indie pop quand elle prend le micro. Les chansons Imagine Nations et Everything Around You, par exemple, sont une bonne démonstration. Mais on peut aussi tomber quelque chose de plus psyché-folk (Skin I'm In) ou inspiré shoegaze façon Swirlies (Swimming). Un album varié donc mais avec sa cohérence, son son (oui, son son).

Eiyn Sof - Acid Ribbon Wreath (album)

Avec Acid Ribbon Wreath, la canadienne Eiyn Sof revient à une musique plus folk, dépouillée et berçante pour rêver éveillé. L'artiste y explore les mirages de son héritage culturel est-européen dans un voyage mythicopsyché avec des compositions en apesanteur aux allures de volutes de fumée. L'album devrait sortir physiquement et prochainement sur zBTFD Records.

Sudden Ray sonne comme une substance à manipuler avec précaution, pouvant exploser à tout moment dans une pyrotechnie psyché rock et noisy, tournesols tournoyants et tourbillonants qui ne manquent pas de graines de folie lo-fi.

Eiyn Sof - Mythic Hymnal (album)

J'étais passé à côté des dernières sorties d'Eiyn Sof, un petit tour sur bandcamp a été l'occasion d'en prendre conscience. Mythic Hymnal, sorti en mars, est un album pop qui ne sort pas des vastes contrées mystico-psyché de la canadienne mais dont des régions nous restent encore à découvrir. Ici les claviers et sons électroniques ont une bonne place sans avoir l'exclusivité, les voix restent aussi très présentes en lead comme dans les choeurs.

I missed the latest Eiyn Sof releases, checking bandcamp was the opportunity to realize that. Mythic Hymnal was released in march and is a pop album that does not leave the wide mystic psychedelic lands of the canadian musician but some regions still remain to be discovered. Here the keyboards and electronic sounds take a good place but without having the exclusivity, voices are important too, lead or backing ones.

Man Meets Bear - Trees Of Mystery (album)

Plongée dans les échos forestiers et l'humidité clapotissante, la folk psychédélique de Man Meets Bear qui a récemment sorti Trees Of Mystery, calme. Le musicien et géologue Soren Brothers dédie cet album aux arbres, dont le bruit des feuilles, selon un Anachinabé qu'il a rencontré, peut soigner. Il n'y a qu'à se laisser entraîner par la musique immersive et au grand air de ce nouveau et très bel album.

A diving into the forest echoes and the slapping humidity, the psychedelic folk music of Man Meets Bear who recently released Trees Of Mystery calms.

The musician and geologist Soren Brothers dedicates this album to trees, of which the sound of leaves can heal according to an Anishinaabe man he once met. All you have to do is let yourself go with the immersive and open air music of this new and beautiful album.

Naoto Kawate, Soren Brothers - Kyoto, Logan (Album)

Musique à écouter, musique à jouer. Le musicien japonais Naoto Kawate à ouvert au public les partitions de ses compositions. Son ami canadien Soren Brothers (Man Meets Bear) les a joué et enregistré.
Il s'agit de 9 pièces de 2 ou 3 minutes en moyenne, jouées au piano. Chacune de ces petites pièces a sa propre personnalité et fait de ce Kyoto, Logan un agréable voyage musical transpacifique. Ce pourrait être un film imaginaire tant ces pièces créent chacune sa scène, son plan, son décor.

Music to listen to, music to play. The japanese musician Naoto Kawate shared to the public the music sheets of his compositions. His canadian friend Soren Brothers (Man Mets Bear) played them and recorded them.
There are 9 pieces of 2 or 3 minutes on average, played on piano. Each one of these pieces has its own personality and make this Kyoto, Logan a pleasant transpacific musical trip. It could be an imaginary movie, each piece creates its scene, its shot and its set.

Eiyn Sof - Abracadabra (Album)

S'engageant dans des sentiers psyché-country, Eiyn Sof éclot un nouvel album éblouissant, à la lumière naturelle. Abracadabra est-il une apparition ou une disparition ? Elle préfère ce qui peut être entre les deux, une métamorphose peut-être.
L'album sonne comme un voyage introspectif avec fenêtre sur l'univers, au travers de 9 titres fantomatiques.

Stepping into psych-country paths, Eiyn Sof hatches a new dazzling album, under a natural light. Is Abracadabra an apparition or a disappearance? She prefers what can be in-between, a metamorphosis maybe.
The album sounds like an introspective trip with a view on the universe, through 9 ghostly tracks.

Thom Coombes - Bedroom Boogie (Album)

 Thom Coombes a sorti cet été une perle de pop lo-fi. Le titre d'ouverture, Pinball, peut laisser penser que Bedroom Boogie est un album de synthé-pop mais il n'en est rien.
Des guitares qui rappellent le meilleur de la scène indé des années 90, notamment The Sugarplastic, tantôt folk, tantôt rock'n'roll de canapé. Dans l'ensemble, Bedroom Boogie est plutôt calme, That Was A Good One! est un des titres les plus envoûtants de l'album, une ballade stellaire nocturne qui intègre un omnichord.
Les boîtes à rythmes accompagnent les titres un peu plus rock'n'roll tels que Placeholder et Papercuts. Le résultat est bien convainquant et fait de Bedroom Boogie un bel album.

Thom Coombes has released last summer a lo-fi pop pearl. The opening track, Pinball, can make you think that Bedroom Boogie is a synth-pop album but you'd be wrong.
Guitars that remind the best of the indie scene of the 90s, like The Sugarplastic, sometimes folk, sometimes sofa rock'n'roll. Bedroom Boogie is rather quiet, That Was A Good One! is one of the most bewitching songs of the album, a nocturnal stellar ballad that includes omnichord.
The drum machines back songs a bit more rock'n'roll like Placeholder and Papercuts. The result is convincing and make Bedroom Boogie a beautiful album.

Oan Uanna - Abracadabra (EP)

C'est quand on ne s'y attend pas et sous un nom chaque fois inattendu que Sean Travis Ramsay réapparait et, ne serait-ce que pour quatre chansons dont une reprise, c'est toujours un plaisir d'entendre sa voix et sa guitare.
Abracadabra, le voilà. C'est dans une brume humide de clapotis qu'il nous donne rendez-vous avec ses chansons folk itinérantes et douces-amer. Mieux vaut ne pas rater la communication de ce talentueux songwriter.

It's when you don't expect it and each time under an unexpected name that Sean Travis Ramsay reappears and, even with only four songs including a cover, it's always a pleasure to listen to his voice and guitar.
Abracadabra, here he is. It's in a humid mist of lapping that he arrange us to meet with his wandering and bittersweet songs. Better not to miss the communication of this talented songwriter.

Dark Bird - Lay Low (Album)

Si vous êtes à la recherche d'un bon album psyché, vous devriez être servis avec cette cassette du canadien Dark Bird sortie chez Uur Audiovisual.
Roan Bateman n'avait pas sorti de véritable album depuis près de 10 ans, il germe à nouveau au milieu des nuages avec Lay Low, voyage en apesanteur éblouissant empruntant les routes aériennes de la folk psychédélique, la guitare sèche accompagnée de légères boîtes-à-rythme et doux synthés.
Il n'y a qu'à se laisser porter.

Eiyn Sof - Meadow Thrum (Album)

C'est en douceur que j'atterris dans ce paysage plumeux qu'est Meadow Thrum de la canadienne Eiyn Sof. La mise en scène irisée de sa folk psychédélique se nourrit d'une faune et flore incantée par les chants, ensembles de voix, respirations, sur des balançoires célestes.
Pas de grands bruits, les accompagnements roulent sur de fines percussions de cristal dans cet univers druidique et forestier où répondent les chants d'oiseaux. Les compositions surréalistes de Eiyn Sof sont troublantes et hypnotisantes, d'une qualité peu commune, les acteurs manufacturés y sont discrets, guitares, autoharpes, pianos apparaissent en retrait comme une pincée de sable jetée aux vents.
Meadow Thrum est définitivement un nectar d'exception.

It is softly that i land on this feathery landscape that is Meadow Thrum by the canadian Eiyn Sof. The iridescent stageplay of its psychedelic folk music is fed off a fauna and flora incanted by chants, vocal ensembles, breathings, on celestial swings.
No loud noises, the accompaniments roll over fine percussions of crystal in this druidic and forest universe where birdsongs answer. The surrealist compositions of Eiyn Sof are unsettling and hypnotizing, of an uncommon quality, the manufactured actors are discreet, guitars, autoharps, pianos stay in the background like a pinch of sand thrown to the winds.
Meadow Thrum is definitively a nectar of exception.

Leon Patriz - Pop Monstrosities (Album)

On respire un grand coup en écoutant ce Pop Monstrosities du canadien Leon Patriz et ses amis, on sort les ballons et on se laisse aller. Non, les chansons ne sont pas vraiment naïves ni enfantines mais elles sont colorées et les rayons de soleil se posent sur la voix tranquille de Leon Patriz et sa pop lo-fi cuivrée qui évoque par moments certaines facettes psychédéliques du collectif Elephant 6, The Gerbils par exemple, ou les délires de Mercury Rev dans la première moitié des années 90.
La deuxième moitié de l'album est plus expérimentale, les arrangements de cuivres cèdent la place aux claviers lo-fi et boîtes à rythmes. La coupure entre les deux moitiés est peut-être un peu trop nette, on a presque deux albums différents.
C'est néanmoins un réel plaisir que d'écouter les 15 titres d'un album qui porte si bien son nom Pop Monstrosities et on ne peut que remercier le label Uur Audiovisual pour cette nouvelle découverte exceptionnelle.

Take a deep breath while listening to this Pop Monstrosities from the canadian Leon Patriz and his friends, release the balloons and go with the flow. No, the songs are not really naive nor childish but they are colorful and the sun rays shine on Leon Patriz quiet voice and its horny lo-fi pop bringing to mind some psychedelic facets of the Elephant 6 collective, The Gerbils for example, or some Mercury Rev deliriums from the first half of the 90's.
The second half of the album is more experimental, the horns arrangements give way to lo-fi keyboards and drum-machines. The break between the two halfs is maybe too clear, we have almost two different albums.
However it's a real pleasure to listen to the 15 tracks of album that wears it's name Pop Monstrosities so well and we can only thank Uur Audiovisual label for this new great find.

Shonsongs - Chansons (EP)

Nouvel EP, nouveau projet pour Sean Travis Ramsay accompagné de Olivia Fetherstonhaugh et Soren Brothers sous le nom Shonsongs. Il faut comprendre "Sean songs" j'imagine, d'ailleurs la première chanson s'intitule Pronunciations. Elle s'ouvre sur "I'm living in a landscape that's unusual to me", témoignage d'un musicien en mouvement perpétuel aussi bien en termes de projets musicaux que géographiquement, ce qui se confirme sur Fantasy Home.
Les 6 titres lo-fi folk se développent sous une formule simple : guitares, voix et piano ou clavier enregistrés sur un petit multipistes portable, à l'exception du dernier, Ellipsis Ellipses, entièrement vocal par Olivia Fetherstonhaugh. Une beau travail encore une fois pour un Sean Travis Ramsay bien entouré.

New EP, new project for Sean Travis Ramsay in the company of Olivia Fetherstonhaugh and Soren Brothers under the name Shonsongs. I guess that means 'Sean songs', by th way the title of the first track is Pronunciations. It opens with the words 'I'm living in a landscape that's unusual to me', a testimony of a musician in perpetual motion in terms of musical projects as well as geographically which is confirmed on Fantasy Home.
The 6 lo-fi folk tracks are developped under a simple formula: guitars, vocals and piano or keyboard recorded on a small portable multitrack, excepted for the last one, Ellipsis Ellipses, entirely made with Olivia Fetherstonhaugh vocals. It is again this time a beautiful work by a well accompanied Sean Travis Ramsay.

Supermoon - Comet Lovejoy (EP)

Supermoon est un quatuor formé à Vancouver, Canada, j'avais écouté leur EP 6 titres  Comet Lovejoy en juin et quelques titres sur leur bandcamp auparavant, j'ai donc un peu de retard pour cet article mais je trouve que ce début d'automne est la bonne période pour s'y pencher.
La cassette, car c'en est une, est garnie de 6 chansons pop sans artifices aux mélodies goûteuses et sucrées et à l'efficacité aussi immédiate que longue durée. La formation féminine, guitares-basse-batterie-voix, soigne ses compositions avec authenticité et plaisir de jouer. Et c'est bien chouette.

Supermoon is a quartet formed in Vancouver, Canada, i've listened to their 6 tracks EP Comet lovejoy in june and some songs on their bandcamp page before so this article is coming late but i think autumn is a good time to write about it.
The cassette, because that's what it is, is garnished with 6 pop songs staightforward with tasty and sweet melodies and an efficiency as immediate as long living. The girl group, guitars-bass-drums-voice, takes care of its compositions with authenticity and the pleasure to play music. And it's real great.

Gretchen - Oblique Contours (EP)

Trio noise-pop originaire de Calgary, Canada, Gretchen vient de sortir un savoureux EP 5 titres qui sent la cave et le manque de vitamine D.
Plus sérieusement, Oblique Contours est un bien bel EP aux guitares tantôt dissonantes et crados, tantôt fragiles et sublimes, on ne sait jamais où nous emmènent les mélodies, vers le calme ou la tempête, on glisse d'un étonnement à l'autre.
Les cousins canadiens de Bisons en quelque sorte (pour ceux qui suivent mon blog).

From Calgary, Canada, Gretchen is a noise-pop trio and they have just released a delicious 5 tracks EP that smells basement and the lack of vitamin D.
More seriously, Oblique Contours is a beautiful EP whose guitars are sometimes dissonant and dirty, sometimes fragiles and sublime, we never know where the melodies will carry us, to the calm or the storm, we slide from an astonishment to another.

Man Meets Bear - Huronian Cadence (Album)

Man Meets Bear revient avec une très belle cassette sortie sur le jeune label Ur. Huronian Cadence est un album de musique folk lo-fi psychédélique et sonique qui respire l'air pur des grands espaces. Des chants lointains et des guitares acoustiques chaleureuses nous parviennent accompagnées de nappes synthétiques brumeuses qui n'enlèvent rien à la texture organique des chansons.
Accroupi sur une terre humide on écoute les 16 titres de Huronian Cadence en rêvassant et on se laisse porter. Ballades folk, instrumentaux bruitistes et doux moments de flottement constituent cette nouvelle oeuvre de Man Meets Bear avec des ambiances qui s'apparentent parfois à The Black Heart Procession ou Deerhunter. Go wild !

Man Meets Bear is back with a beautiful cassette released on the young label Ur. Huronian Cadence is a psychedelic and sonic lo-fi folk music album which breathes the pure air of wide spaces. Distant chants and warm acoustic guitars are carried by misty synthetic waves that doesn't withdraw the organic texture of the songs.
Crouching on the humid ground and daydreaming, the 16 tracks of Huronian Cadence carry its listener to higher places. Folk ballads, noisy intrumentals and sweet floating moments form this new Man Meets Bear work with moods that sometimes remember The Black Heart Procession or Deerhunter. Go wild!

Slight Birching - Cultural Envelope

Sean Travis Ramsay revient avec son projet Slight Birching accompagné de ses amis pour une sortie physique cette fois-ci. Le disque paraîtra en juin mais il est déjà disponible en précommande. On retrouve les mélodies folk poussiéreuses de Sean, transportées par des arrangements spatiaux. La nouvelle version de la chanson Currency est une petite merveille.

Sean Travis Ramsay comes back with his project Slight Birching accompanied by his friends for a physical release this time. The album will be released in june but you can pre-order it now. We still find Sean's dusty folk melodies but transported by spatial arrangements. The new version of the song Currency is a little gem.
