Quel rapport entre Axl Rose et Mark Zuckerberg ? Pas de lien familial à priori, par contre si je vous ai déjà parlé de Paul Vickers, voici son frère Steven Vickers sous le nom Victor Pope. Paul est le frère de Steven et Steven le frère de Paul.
This Is Going To Hurt est-on averti. Les chansons qui composent cet album de The Victor Pope Band ne sont pas à prendre au premier degré mais comme l'agitateur qui remue votre café du matin, celui qui vous fait commencer la journée dans de bonnes conditions.
Provocatrices et drôles ces chansons entre anti-folk, punk et pop sont un régal, l'imitation d'Axl Rose au début d'About Facebook est bluffante mais moins chiante que l'original. Vous le voyez le rapport maintenant ? Beaucoup de hits dont Me and Donald Trump qui tient du génie.

District Repair Depot - Argy-Bargy (EP)

Il serait dommage de passer à côté de ces 4 titres de District Repair Depot, à commencer par le premier, Argy-Bargy, décharge d'énergie pas trop sérieuse qui possède de quoi bien accrocher l'auditeur avec son riff simple et roulant.
Mais bon, voilà The End Of Times Song, c'est-à-dire qu'après avoir bien excité tout le monde faut bien revenir au calme, hein. Ça y est ? Sûr ? Bon. Cette douce petite promenade instrumentale ayant fait son effet nos oreilles sont bien sages pour écouter les bonheurs de la pop magistrale de (The World of) Autumn Feelings et parce qu'on a besoin d'espoir All Will Be Well vient poursuivre cet élan pop et psychédélique. Sûr ? Comment interpréter ces dissonances clôturant ce quatrième morceau ? Libre à vous.

The Bordellos - Debt Sounds (Album)

Pas de souffle coupé pour ce nouvel album de The Bordellos, au contraire, mais une franchise contraignante et un irréductible crédo lo-fi. Enregistré sur un 4-pistes sans réenregistrements avec du matériel de seconde main ne dépassant pas les 5£, la majorité des voix sont de premières prises et les chansons découvertes par les musiciens le soir même de leur enregistrement.
Entre crise d'adolescence et crise de la quarantaine en fonction des membres, Debt Sounds fait sa propre convergence des luttes, dépouillée et crue, sensible et chaotique tout au long des 17 titres, c'est un vide-poches punk-folk, un pont entre Daniel Johnston et Chokebore (Fine), la désillusion magnifiquement révélée.

No breath taken away in this new album by The Bordellos, on the contrary, but a restrictive outspokenness and a hardliner lo-fi credo. Recorded on a 4-track without overdubs and with second-hand equipment not higher than 5£, most of the vocals are first takes and the songs were discovered by the musicians the nights they had to record them.
Between teenage and midlife crisis depending on the members, Debt Sounds makes its own convergence of struggles, pared-down and crude, sensible and chaotic all along the 17 tracks, it's a punk-folk trinket bowl, a bridge between Daniel Johnston and Chokebore (Fine), disillusionment magnificently revealed.

District Repair Depot - District Repair Depot (Album)

Entre Londres et Canterbury, le duo District Repair Depot a conçu derrière cette façade peu joyeuse, un doux album de pop à tendance psychédélique paru ce mois-ci sur le label Gare du Nord Records.
Comment ne pas aimer un groupe qui chante I Like Libraries, un titre découvert au détour de l'émission mensuelle de Mark Whitby sur Dandelion Radio ? Un errement léger et paisible. Quant au très 60s Signal Box, il nous emmène dans un voyage en train roulant sur de belles harmonies vocales pour rendre visite a un Flat Stanley dansant la valse.
Autre chanson remarquable, Take Yourself To Town s'inscrit parfaitement dans la lignée de la pop psychédélique britannique, l'une de mes préférés de cet album agréablement varié et plaisant a écouter.

Between London and Canterbury, the duo District Repair Depot have conceived behind this not much joyful facade, a sweet pop album with a psychedelic tendency released this month on Gare Du Nord Records
How could we not love a band that sings I Like Libraries, a track discovered in the course of Mark Whitby's monthly show on Dandelion Radio? A light and peaceful wandering. As for the very 60s like Signal Box, it takes us to a trip by train rolling of beautiful vocal harmonies to pay a visit to a Flat Stanley dancing the waltz.
Take Yourself To Town, another remarkable song,is perfectly in the line with british psychedelic pop music, one of my favourites of this album nicely varied and pleasant to listen to.

Flotation Toy Warning - The Machine That Made Us (Album)

Un premier album qui a demandé du temps pour être apprivoisé et qui continue de mûrir dans une aura quasi mystique. La barre était haute pour le second album de Flotation Toy Warning dont la sortie a signé la fin du mystère, la descente de l'Olympe.
Il ne faut pas céder à l'impatience de vouloir immédiatement tout ce que Bluffer's Guide To The Flight Deck nous a patiemment donné pendant 13 ans, les chansons de The Machine That Made Us, tout comme celles de son prédécesseur prennent leur temps, c'est la marque de fabrique du groupe a respecter, bien que la tendance actuelle soit à l'écoute boulimique et superficielle de musique.
En 2004 je parcourais les pages du livret du Bluffer's Guide To The Flight Deck, ses paysages enneigés et ses silhouettes, en 2017 le mammouth marque le début du dégel, la fin de la longue nuit polaire. The Machine That Made Us rencontre les premiers rayons de soleil et les cœurs se réchauffent un peu, suffisamment pour venir nous réconforter comme un vieil ami rendant la pareille.
Malgré les efforts de Paul Carter pour se remettre dans l'état d'esprit du premier, ce nouvel album apporte une évolution dans le fond, mais une évolution logique dans un monde fait de cycles et de saisons. Une chose est sûre, la musique de Flotation Toy Warning n'en finit pas de toucher par sa beauté, que ce soit sur A Season Underground, un ambassadeur qui porte l'histoire de ce disque et d'une longue attente, ou sur Driving Under The Influence Of Loneliness, autre magnifique (petit) morceau.

The first album required some time to be tamed and still grows up in an almost mystic aura. The bar is set high for Flotation Toy Warning's second album whose release signed the end of the mystery, the descent of the Mount Olympus.
We should not give in to the impatience of wanting immediately all that Bluffer's Guide To The Flight Deck gave us patiently in the 13 last years, the songs of The Machine That Made Us, just like the ones from its predecessor take their time, it's the respectable band's trademark, though the current tendency is to listen to music voraciously and superficially.
In 2004 i was looking over the pages of the booklet of Bluffer's Guide To The Flight Deck, its snowy landscapes and silhouettes, in 2017 the mammoth marks the beginning of the thaw, the end of a long polar night. The Machine That Made Us meets the first sunrays and hearts warm up a little bit, enough to comfort us like an old friend returning the favour.
Despite Paul Carter's efforts to get back into the state of mind of the first, this new album brings an evolution in the content, but a logical evolution in a world made of cycles and seasons. One thing is certain, Flotation Toy Warning's music never stops touching us with its beauty whether on A Season Underground, an ambassador carrying the history of this album and the wait or on Driving Under The Influence Of Loneliness, another magnificent (short) song.

Tom O.C Wilson - Tell A Friend (Album)

Tom O.C Wilson continue son bonhomme de chemin abandonnant au passage son pseudo, Freeze Puppy, qu'il a revêtu pendant de nombreuses années et accueillant la compagnie de musiciens en renfort depuis son précédent album The Night Attendant. Tell A Friend renoue avec les compositions espiègles dans la continuité d'Animation, chef-d’œuvre de la pochette surprise, en poussant la chansonnette sur des formats plus longs et avec une affirmation prononcée de son style unique.
C'est aussi un disque qui demande de l'attention mais contrairement à d'autres œuvres à l'architecture complexe il s'apprivoise très rapidement car si on peut avoir l'impression d'être un peu perdu aux premières écoutes, où que l'on puisse être, on se sent toujours bien, comme dans un labyrinthe où chaque couloir est un monde joyeux, amical et fascinant. Half Love en est un bel exemple, une merveille pop qui surpasse allègrement les classiques du genre.
Tell A Friend est clairement un album majeur de cette année qui réécrit la musique pop avec autant de talent et d'avant-gardisme que de prestigieux artistes tels que Robert Wyatt l'avaient fait auparavant en poussant toujours plus loin la réinvention.

Tom O.C Wilson goes merrily along giving up on the way his alias Freeze Puppy that he has been wearing for many years and welcoming the company of musicians as backup since his previous album The Night Attendant. Tell A Friend takes up again the mischievous compositions in the continuity of Animation, masterpiece of the party cone bag, singing a song in longer formats and with a strong assertion of his own unique style.
It's also a record that asks for attention but unlike other works with a complex architecture it becomes tame very quickly because even if we can feel a bit lost during the first listenings, no matter where we are we always feel good like in a labyrinth where each lane is a joyful world, friendly and fascinating. Half Love is a great example, a pop marvel surpassing blithely the genre classics.
Tell A Friend is clearly a major album of this year, rewriting pop musique with as much talent and avant-garde as prestigious artists such as Robert Wyatt did it before always pushing the reinvention further.

Bing Selfish - Songs Of Inexperience (Album)

Bing Selfish est un trublion mystérieux malgré plus de 30 ans de productions, un anglais installé en Catalogne, peut-être toujours, peut-être plus, en tout cas lors de l'écriture des chansons de Songs Of Inexperience il payait ses factures d'eau en euros.
Cet album sorti l'année dernière reflète l'extravagance de son auteur adepte du psychédélisme de chambre et des barrières floues entre humour, insignifiance et commentaires politiques. Héritier du Pink Floyd de Syd Barrett et appartenant à la génération de Nick Currie (Momus) et Stephen Tunney (Dogbowl), Bing Selfish déploie une pop lo-fi fantaisiste et irrévérencieuse que je vous recommande chaudement.

This album released last year reflects the eccentricity of its author disciple of bedroom psychedelism and blurry barriers between humour, insignificance et political commentaries. Inheritor of Syd Barret's Pink Floyd and belonging to the generation of Nick Currie (Momus) and Stephen Tunney (Dogbowl), Bing Selfish spreads out a whimsical and irreverent lo-fi pop that i highly recommend you.

The Sexual Objects - Marshmallow (Album)

Avoir un groupe qui s'appelle Monster Surprise n'est pas l'idéal quand on fait des recherches sur internet mais bon, qu'est que ça doit être avec The Sexual Objects... et puis vouloir un nom qui soit google-friendly pour son groupe c'est carrément déprimant.
Après Cucumber, voici Marshmallow, plus tendre et second album du groupe mené par Davy Henderson (Fire Engines, Nectarine No.9), un disque qui aurait très bien pu rester dans la confidentialité avec une seule copie (et les droits) vendue aux enchères. Heureusement il semble que l'heureux propriétaire ait bien voulu le partager. 300 copies cette fois. Épuise en quelques jours.
Cucumber balançait pas mal, Marshmallow est assez pop avec ses allures de dandy, une chanson est d'ailleurs dédiée au défunt et talentueux Kevin Ayers. L'album est divisé en une première partie de 5 chansons et une seconde de 4 instrumentaux. Le charme de ces morceaux tient beaucoup aux ensembles de voix et de guitares qui gardent leur indépendance et liberté au sein des compositions, calés mais pas rangés, légèrement dissonants. C'est un petit détail qui change beaucoup de choses et rend la musique plus vivante, et sensuelle, puisque c'est l'idée de départ.
On a aussi et surtout affaire à de sacrés cocos de la mélodie, Cincinnati Blooms, Kevin Ayers, Marshmallow et Astrastube le prouvent largement, capables de partir dans 16 minutes de rock cradingue et psychédélique, le cas de Squash.
C'est donc un album à ne pas rater cette année.

To have a band named Monster Surprise is not the ideal thing when you make searches on the internet but well, i guess it's even worse with The Sexual Objects... and to want a google-friendly name for a band is squarely depressing.

Cucumber rocked quite a bit, Marshmallow is rather pop with dandy attraits, a song is by the way dedicated to to the deceased and talentuous Kevin Ayers. The album is divided in a first part of 5 songs and a second one of 4 instrumentals. The charm of theses pieces comes a lot from the ensembles of voices and guitars that keep their independance and freedom inside the compositions, together but not orderly, a bit dissonant. It's a little detail that changes a lot and makes the music more lively, and sensual, as it's the main idea.
We are also, and above all, dealing with a hell of melody guys, Cincinnati Blooms, Kevin Ayers, Marshmallow et Astrastube largely prove it, able to go on 16 minutes of dirty and psychedelic rock, the case of Squash.
So it's a not-to-be-missed album of this year.

Das Kosmische Bad - Dip A Toe (Album)

Le dadaduo londonien Das Kosmische Bad composé de Ray Kosmische et Stanley Bad explore l'univers cosmicomique et irraisonné de ses deux têtes maîtresses, dévalant en roue libre un escalier aux marches electro-hip-pop et jazz.
Das Kosmische Bad ne se préoccupe pas des conventions et laisse la musique se guider elle-même. Dip A Toe sorti en 2014 s'ouvre par le titre le plus pop de l'album, Trek (to the Highest Summit), avec un peu de folie qui me fait penser, à tort ou a raison, à Syd Barrett et Van Dyke Parks. Le reste est plus expérimental, touillant une mixture de sons électro, boîtes-à-rythme et xaphoon, ukulele, c'est Pere Ubu à Disneyland (ça veut dire que c'est bien).
Le titre Dip A Toe entraîne dans une chevauchée à dos de balai à ressort et offre le moment le plus enfantin de ces 9 titres. Si vous aimez les choux de Bruxelles et laisser pousser votre barbe, cet album est fait pour vous.

The song Dip A Toe leads to a ride on the back of a sprung broom and offers the most childish moment of these 9 tracks. If you like brussels sprouts and letting your beard grow, this album is for you.

Filtig & Dalot - Boats (Album)

L'habitué des collaborations Filtig s'allie avec la musicienne Dalot pour un album en commun dans lequel quelques invités font leur apparition ici et là. Boats, comme un voyage, une nostalgie, les flots qui relient l'Angleterre et la Grèce entre lesquels naviguent les deux pêcheurs de temps morts.
Justement, Boats est hors du temps, un album d'instrumentaux électro-folkloriques abandonnés aux changements d'humeur des vagues. On y trouve quelques reprises dont un nocturne de Chopin au son du toy piano, mais surtout des originaux mystérieux et berçants. Mettez vos bottes, gardez votre ciré à portée de main et fermez les yeux, peut-être les astres vous parleront-ils.
